Pakistan coronavirus: 'We can't see it, but everyone is terrified'

When 50-year-old Saadat Khan returned to his village outside the northern Pakistani city of Mardan from a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, a feast was thrown in his honour.

According to his son Haq Nawaz, about 600 people attended.

"We cooked rice, meat and chicken," he told the  The "whole village" came and congratulated him, he added.
It's traditional in Pakistan to celebrate the achievement of performing such an important religious ritual. Just days later, however, Mr Khan would become the first person in the country to die from coronavirus, and his entire local district would be placed under a strict lockdown.
Out of 46 people tested for the disease in the community so far, 39 have been confirmed as positive. Two friends who flew back with him from Saudi Arabia also contracted coronavirus.
Mr Khan's death highlights the challenges of fighting the infection in developing countries like Pakistan, where large extended families live together, often in crowded conditions, and where healthcare systems are already struggling. One health expert warned the country was heading for "disaster" if adequate preventions were not implemented.

Festival held in shadow of outbreak
There have been about 1,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and eight deaths in Pakistan. A substantial portion are people who were travelling back from neighbouring Iran, which has been particularly badly affected, but there are growing fears about how the virus is spreading.

Professor Javed Akram, vice-chancellor at the University of Health Sciences in Lahore, told the BBC "domestic transmission" within Pakistan was now his main concern.

Mr Akram added that the true number of cases in the country, as elsewhere in the world, was likely to be far higher than had been recorded, because of a lack of testing capacity. So far, about 6,000 tests have been performed, while Pakistan's population is over 207 million.
The teeming port city of Karachi is Pakistan's commercial hub, and has been home to a rising number of coronavirus infections. Amongst the patients is Saeed Ghani, the education minister for Sindh Province.

He said officials were aware that reported figures were not necessarily an "accurate reflection" of the reality on the ground, and that led the local Sindh government to implement a strict lockdown earlier this week. All non-essential travel outside the home has been banned, while only food and medical stores are allowed to stay open. Similar measures are now also in place across the country.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, however, has appeared out of step with local provincial governments. He had previously said a "lockdown" would not be sustainable in Pakistan, as it would cause too much harm to those on low incomes.

After provincial governments went ahead and introduced measures tantamount to a "lockdown" anyway, Mr Khan attempted to explain he only opposed what he described as a "curfew," while also outlining some measures to protect the poorest in society, who are dependent on daily wages to feed their families. Unlike other Muslim countries, his government has not ordered an end to congregational prayers on Fridays.

Three reasons why the UK might not look like Italy

Much of Italy is currently in lockdown as the country's tally of coronavirus deaths has topped 1,000.

The outbreak is putting the Italian healthcare service under immense strain. But will the UK follow this path?
On Thursday, Boris Johnson's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, said the UK was four weeks behind Italy "in terms of the scale of the outbreak" if not "in terms of the response".

Does that mean we're four weeks away from a similar fate?

Not necessarily. Here are three reasons why experts believe the UK's epidemic could be different from Italy's, and why the number of cases here means something different.

The number of confirmed cases is not the same as the number of actual cases. It depends on how many infected people are detected.

The epidemics in both countries may be growing at a similar rate now, but early on the UK had more diagnosed cases than Italy. Italian numbers shot up on 23 February, leading scientists to think there was a period when the virus was spreading without being detected.

That gave less room for measures like tracing contacts of those who had fallen ill and isolating cases to slow the spread.

Professor of international public health Jimmy Whitworth says that put the health system "behind the curve" in controlling the epidemic.

Researchers also warn that the Italy virus testing system has become overwhelmed and is not keeping up with new cases. This means Italy's figures could be falling further behind the total number of actual cases.

And as the UK adds more testing capacity, Prof Whitworth adds, we might see a "jump in numbers" - not just a result of greater transmission, but better detection.

2. Italy's epidemic is more concentrated
The pressure on health services also depends on where, and how severe, each case is.

There are good reasons to believe that these factors are different for the two countries. Since the initial spread, most of Italy's epidemic has been concentrated in the northern region of Lombardy, home to just over 15% of Italians.

Lombardy has accounted for almost 60 in every 100 cases in Italy. By contrast, the epidemic, so far, is more spread out in the UK. Like Lombardy, London has about 15% of citizens. But it has a smaller proportion of cases: just under 25 in 100.

So 15,000 cases spread out across the UK might not put the same pressure on hospitals as they would if they were mainly in one city or region.

The UK government is still planning for a time when the NHS will face significant challenges. But that may not be when we catch up with Italy's current number of confirmed cases.
3. More of Italy's confirmed cases are fatal
The death rate among confirmed cases in Italy is higher than in the UK. As of 12 March, the mortality rates among detected cases were 1.4% for the UK and 6.7% for Italy.

Prof Whitworth believes a higher death rate in Italy could mean that the observed cases contain a larger number of sicker patients. Italy has an older population than the UK, and the effects of Covid-19 infection have been more serious in older people.

That puts more pressure on services.

The alternative explanation for the higher death rate is that Italy's is an overwhelmed health service.

How deadly is the coronavirus?
Don't relax quite yet
Even though our epidemic may not follow Italy's exactly, that doesn't mean the UK will escape serious changes to its way of life.

Epidemiologist Adam Kucharski warns against simple comparisons of case numbers and that "without efforts to control the virus we could still see a situation evolve like that in Italy", even if not necessarily in the next four weeks

Huawei: PM faces Commons rebellion by Tory MPs over 5G contract

Boris Johnson is facing his first Commons rebellion since his general election victory over Huawei's role in the UK's 5G mobile internet network.

A number of senior Conservatives are set to back an amendment which would end the Chinese firm's participation in the project by the start of 2023.

Ministers approved Huawei's involvement in January but capped its share at 35%.

Tory critics say Huawei is an arm of the Chinese state and a risk to UK security - claims the firm rejects.

The government say the Chinese firm will be excluded from the most sensitive parts of the 5G network and that its overall market share will decline over time as new players emerge.

But the US, which has banned Huawei from its own telecoms networks, has been highly critical of the UK's decision, urging it to rethink its plans.

'Very concerned'
And a group of Conservative MPs led by the party's former leader Iain Duncan Smith are pushing for firms classified as "high-risk vendors" by the National Cyber Security Centre to be banned entirely from the project by 31 December 2022.

They say up to 30 Conservatives could rebel on Tuesday by backing an amendment to the Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill. With a majority of 80, the government is unlikely to suffer a defeat.

China warns of Huawei 5G 'witch-hunt'

What is Huawei and how could it be a security threat?

Huawei 5G verdict is decision 'with few good options'

But in an attempt to limit the size of the revolt, No 10 is reported to have arranged a series of meetings on Monday between MPs - including former cabinet ministers David Davis and Damian Green - and security officials from GCHQ.

Whatever the outcome of Tuesday's vote, Tory MP Bob Seely said it was the "start of a process" about Parliament talking about Huawei's role in the UK's mobile telecoms infrastructure.

"The important thing is that, with the vibe that we're getting from colleagues, many many more are very concerned about it," he said.

Downing Street has said it will continue to keep the 35% market cap under review and that it hoped to get to a stage as quickly as possible where high-risk vendors were not required.

But at a briefing on Monday No 10 insisted that the government's leading cyber security advisers were satisfied with the approach and that it would not impact on the UK's ability to share intelligence with the US and its other leading allies.

Lebanon to default on debt payments for first time as crisis deepens

Lebanon is to default on a foreign debt payment for the first time in its history as the country struggles with a major financial crisis.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab said Lebanon would not be making a bond payment of $1.2bn (£900m) due on Monday.

"The debt has become bigger than Lebanon can bear, and bigger than the ability of the Lebanese to meet interest payments," Mr Diab said.

Lebanon has been struggling since the value of its currency plummeted.

The Lebanese pound has been losing กลุ่มลับไลฟ์สด20+ value against the dollar for months, in part because the country's banks have been reluctant to convert local pounds to dollars - leading to an increase in demand for the latter.

This issue with foreign exchange has led to importers having difficulty accessing goods, which have become more expensive. Those with savings have also been affected by the drop in value of the local currency.

In a live televised address on Saturday, Mr Diab said that negotiations to restructure the country's debt, which stands at more than $30bn, would continue "with all creditors... in a manner consistent with the national interest".

Mr Diab added that more than 40% of the population could soon be in poverty as Lebanon tackles its worst economic crisis in decades.

The 61-year-old became prime minister in January as part of a new government that formed after protests over the failure of leaders to deal with the economic crisis turned violent.

New government ends months of deadlock
Stealing power to survive
In October, anti-government protesters took to the streets in response to rising prices, high youth unemployment, poor public services and corruption.

The crisis has severely hit public services, with electricity and water supplies frequently disrupted and rubbish left to pile up on the streets.

With Lebanon remaining heavily in debt, economists suggest that หลุดไลฟ์สดพริตตี้ a rescue deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the only way forward - and real reforms would be needed for that to happen.

Yes Bank customers queue for cash after India's central bank takes control

Worried customers have been queuing to withdraw money from India's Yes Bank after the country's central bank seized control of the troubled lender.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it wanted to "quickly restore depositors' confidence" in the bank.

Depositors with Yes Bank can now only withdraw the equivalent of about $630 (£486) during a one-month moratorium.

During this time, the RBI will work on a rescue plan for India's fifth biggest private bank.

Yes Bank has an estimated $28bn in deposits but had been seeking new capital to bolster its finances before it was seized by the central bank.

Queues of people were seen lining up outside the bank's ATMs in Mumbai after the announcement was made on Thursday.

"There is no กลุ่มลับไลฟ์สด18+ safety. What's happening? As Indians we felt our banks were the safest," Nita Chabbria, a Yes bank customer, told the

"What was most frustrating is that the digital platform's just shutdown. Neither the mobile or internet banking is working. I had to borrow money from my father."

Another customer, Harish Chawla, said: "I've been here since 8:15 in the morning. They've given us a token and asked us to wait till 3pm. None of the managers are coming out and giving us any information."

Yes Bank shares plummeted as much as 80% on Friday morning as the central bank said it was trying to work out a rescue plan to avoid any systemic risk to the economy.

"Its existence as an independent entity has now become unviable," said Hemindra Hazari, an independent financial analyst.

"The moment a moratorium is announced, and you put restrictions on withdrawals, you lose your depositor franchise because they lose faith in you. The only option now is for another bank to absorb it."

The RBI has asked State Bank of India, the country's หลุดหลุ่มลับ largest state-owned bank, to help with a revival plan for Yes Bank.

"It is too big to fail, and the regulators will not allow the situation to worsen," said Jaikishan Parmar, a Delhi-based banking analyst with Angel Broking.

In 2016, India passed a law on recovering bad debts that placed more pressure on all banks to more quickly identify and report long-standing troubled loans and poor oversight, which have acted as a major drag on fresh lending.

"India's banking sector - as well as the wider financial sector with the shadow banks - is still under stress, and there have been no quick fixes to this issue," said TS Lombard director of India Research Shumita Sharma Deveshwar.

"The RBI has been reluctant to intervene in private financial institutions but it had to in this case to prevent a run on the bank, as well as to control the possible broader repercussions due to Yes Bank's inter-linkages with other institutions."

Private lenders such as Yes Bank were initially welcomed as bringing new technologies and fresh approaches to the state-dominated banking sector.

Super Tuesday: Biden seals comeback with string of victories

Joe Biden has won nine of the 14 states that voted to pick a Democratic White House candidate on Super Tuesday, a remarkable rebound for his campaign.

The former US vice-president overturned predictions to narrowly take the key state of Texas from his main challenger, Bernie Sanders.
However, Mr Sanders is projected to win California - the biggest prize of the night - as well as three other states.
They lead the race to face Republican President Donald Trump in November.
Former New York mayor กลุ่มลับไลฟ์สด18+ Michael Bloomberg spent more than half a billion dollars of his own money on his campaign, but did not win a single state.
And Senator Elizabeth Warren, once the frontrunner in the race, suffered a humiliating defeat to Mr Biden in her home state of Massachusetts.
Super Tuesday awards more than 1,300 of the 1,991 delegates needed to clinch the Democratic White House nomination in July. As things stand, Mr Biden has 402 delegates and Mr Sanders 314.

How important is Biden's performance?

Only last month, Mr Biden's campaign was all but written off by some observers after finishing a poor fourth in the Iowa caucuses and fifth in New Hampshire.
But on Tuesday, as well as Texas, Mr Biden took Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.
Virginia and North Carolina are crucial because they are key swing states in the 2020 election.

Exit polls across the board suggested Mr Biden - who was vice-president to Barack Obama - attracted large majorities of African-American voters, a crucial bloc for the Democratic party.
Mr Biden also appears to have won among the type of suburban voters who pollsters say have been turning away from the current US president.
"We are very much alive," Mr Biden told a crowd in Los Angeles. "Make no mistake about it, this campaign will send Donald Trump packing."

How is Sanders doing?

If Mr Sanders does win California, as the Associated Press news หลุดหลุ่มลับ agency projects, he will pick up the lion's share of the whopping 415 delegates that the Golden State sends to the party convention.

Japanese shares fall as coronavirus fears persist

Shares in Japan have fallen over concerns that world governments and central banks won't do enough to tackle the economic impact of the coronavirus.

It comes despite stock markets bouncing back in the US and Europe on hopes that authorities will work together to support markets.

The Dow Jones surged 5.1% overnight, after more modest gains in Europe.

The rebound followed the worst week for major stock markets since the 2008 financial crisis.

Japanese shares closed 1.2% lower due to concerns that หลุดหลุ่มลับ Group of Seven (G7) countries may not announce a detailed and coordinated response to limit the economic damage from the outbreak.

The G7 is expected to release a statement later today or tomorrow as policymakers struggle to respond to the global spread of the virus, but there are concerns that it may not mention any new government กลุ่มลับไลฟ์สด18+ spending or coordinated interest rate cuts.

Investors have been worried about the impact of the coronavirus as it spreads outside of China. Already, the outbreak has led to travel restrictions, manufacturing shortages and reduced shopper demand in some countries.

On Tuesday Australia's central bank cut interest rates to record lows, in what is expected to be the first in a spate of stimulus measures around the world to fight the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe said: "The board took this decision to support the economy as it responds to the global coronavirus outbreak."

It comes after central banks in the UK, US, Europe and Japan made statements aimed at calming fears following last week's market turmoil.
